Privacy Policy
Tiger Lingo works without an account. If you sign in with Apple or Google, your email and saved history are kept on the Tiger server so they can follow you between devices.
Last updated 20 October 2026.
The short version
- The sentence you translate is sent to our server and, unless you have downloaded that language to your phone, on to a translation model provider.
- Word meanings, colours and romanisation are worked out on our own server; no provider sees them.
- Your dictation and your camera never leave the phone — both are processed on the device.
- Signed-in accounts store your email, sessions, quota counters and history on the Tiger server.
- Guests can translate without an account; guest history is not saved.
- Deleting your account removes its identity, sessions, quota records and server history.
Who this is
Tiger Lingo is made and operated by Devviy. Questions about this policy or about your data go to hello@devviy.com. Our server runs in a data centre in Singapore.
What you translate
When you translate a sentence, the app sends to our server — for word meanings, and for the translation itself unless you have downloaded that language (see below):
- the text you typed, dictated or scanned;
- which language it is in and which language you want;
- the optional speaker profile from settings — gender and politeness — which the translation uses to pick the right pronouns and particles.
Guests send no name or email with a translation request. Signed-in requests carry the bearer session needed to save history to that account; the connection is encrypted (HTTPS).
Where it goes
Our server does not translate sentences itself. It forwards your sentence to a language model run by one of these providers, and passes the answer back to your phone:
- OpenAI — the primary route for sentence translation.
- OpenRouter — the same model reached a second way, used when the first route is unavailable.
- Google — a fallback that translates the sentence when neither route above answers.
Each provider handles what it receives under its own privacy policy, linked above. We send them the sentence, the language pair and the speaker setting — nothing that identifies you: no account, email, device identifier or IP address.
The app asks before it sends any sentence toward these providers. Until you allow it, or after you turn it off in Settings → Online translation, no new sentence is sent to them; languages you have downloaded keep translating on your phone.
Downloaded languages. If you download a language from the language list (iPhone, iOS 26 or later), sentences in that language are translated on your phone by Apple's built-in translator and are not sent to any provider. Apple may collect usage measurements such as the app and the language pair, but not the text (Apple's description). The sentence and its translation still go to our server for the word meanings.
The word-by-word breakdown — which word matches which, its part of speech, its meaning and romanisation — is computed on our server from dictionaries. It is not sent to any provider.
What the server keeps
- Your account, if you sign in. Sign-in uses Apple or Google. We keep the email address they give us (with Apple's “Hide My Email” that is a private relay address), a one-way fingerprint of the Apple or Google account, hashed session tokens, quota counters and the history entries you create. History stays until you delete the row or delete the account.
- A translation cache, up to 30 days. A translated sentence and its result are stored so that translating the same sentence again is instant and costs nothing. Entries are filed under a fingerprint of the sentence, not under any identifier of yours, and the store holds only the few thousand most recent ones. Nothing links an entry to the phone that asked for it.
- Your IP address, about a day. For guests, the server counts translations per IP address so one caller cannot exhaust the free service. The address is the key of that counter and is not stored with your text. Counters are cleared after their day (UTC) ends; copies inside the encrypted backups below are gone within 7 days.
- Encrypted backups, 7 days. The account database is backed up once a day, encrypted, to private Cloudflare R2 storage. Each backup is replaced after 7 days.
We do not log the text of your translations. Our application logs record the request path, status and timing, not what you translated.
What never leaves your phone
- Dictation. Voice input is transcribed on the device — the app requires on-device recognition, so your audio is not sent to us or to anyone else.
- Camera scanning. Text in a photo is recognised on the device. The image itself is never uploaded; only the text you then choose to translate is sent, exactly like typed text.
- Guest history and settings. Guest translations are not saved as history. App settings and the offline window remain on the phone; signed-in history and favourites are stored on the Tiger server.
- Offline copies. The word meanings of your recent sentences are kept on the phone so they show without a connection, and a signed-in sentence translated offline waits on the phone until it can be saved to your history. Signing out clears both.
- Read-aloud. Pronunciation uses the voices built into your phone.
Languages you download translate without a connection. Word meanings for new sentences, saving history and languages you have not downloaded need an internet connection.
Children
Tiger Lingo is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect anything from them. An account is optional, and an account email is collected only when someone chooses to sign in.
Deleting your data
Delete a history row in the app, or delete your account to remove its server identity, sessions, quota records and history in one request. Copies inside the encrypted backups disappear as those backups are replaced, within 7 days. To make sure a restored backup can never bring a deleted account back, we keep an encrypted deletion record — the account's internal ID and email — for 7 days. Deleting the app removes its local settings and cached window; it does not delete an account, so delete the account first if you want server history removed.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it, and a change that affects what we send or keep will be called out in the app's release notes.
